The teacher is said to have placed the puppy—who may have been sick—inside a snapping turtle's tank, presumably as a food source. Witnesses allegedly saw the puppy swim around for nearly a minute before being nearly cut in half by the turtle. The young animal apparently screamed before being attacked again and killed. The shocking incident quickly became national news. ~~

The only reason the puppy was considered "sick" is because the random farmer they got the puppy from may or may not have said so, according the animal abuser's son.

As far as I'm aware, the dog was not taken to a vet. The dude decided to do this on his own.

I know from my sister's time at the national aviary that the state cops will deliver freshly killed deer for the aviary to feed to the larger birds of prey like the condors. My sister's job was to remove the teeth and such before they were fed to the birds.
Now I'm picturing that being done to humans awaiting death by mauling.

I could see euthanizing a sick puppy to feed to the turtle, but feeding it to the turtle alive?

It isn't, but it is careless. Feeding domesticated animals live to other animals is generally not socially acceptable, even if it exists within the bounds of the law. It gets way, way too close to animal fighting which is banned.

One student testifed that when the puppy was put in the water with the turtle, it paddled a few times before the turtle grabbed it and pulled it under the water.
Defense attorneys asked the case be dismissed, saying the puppy didn't suffer.

This whole story is sickening. How is this guy getting away with this recklessness and complete lack of understanding and empathy.
His friends are saying he's an animal lover!?

This is something that happens in nature all the time. Sick animals get eaten by other animals.
